Throughout November, in recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, Alderwood of Davidson County is inviting local faith communities of all denominations to observe Hospice Sabbath.
Hospice Sabbath is a special, designated time of remembrance, reflection, and education that brings faith congregations together to honor loved ones who have passed, support individuals and families facing serious illness, and recognize the tireless dedication of caregivers and healthcare professionals. The observance also aims to increase broader community awareness of hospice and palliative care options.
“Faith communities offer profound comfort, strength, and connection when families navigate life’s most difficult moments,” said Cole Warner, Director of Support Services and the Counseling Center at Alderwood of Davidson County. “Hospice Sabbath provides a compassionate space to remember those we have lost, celebrate our caregivers, and gently open up important conversations about care choices before a family is ever faced with a crisis.”
Alderwood of Davidson County invites congregations to observe Hospice Sabbath in ways that are most meaningful and fitting for their unique traditions and communities. Suggested recognition activities include special prayers, readings, or reflections during services, a designated moment of silence for those facing serious illness or mourning a loss, and interactive remembrance activities for congregants. Congregations may also choose to offer public recognition and blessings for family caregivers and healthcare workers, or distribute educational resources regarding hospice and palliative care.
Additionally, organizations and churches may request a speaker from Alderwood to present on topics such as hospice and palliative care, grief counseling, caregiver resources, and ways to honor loved ones who have passed away.
To further assist congregations, Alderwood offers a special Hospice Sabbath bulletin insert filled with helpful information about the observance. Churches can call to request that these inserts be printed and delivered directly to them, or they can conveniently download them from the organization’s website.
By fostering these dialogues early, Hospice Sabbath helps individuals and their loved ones better understand the comprehensive support, comfort, and resources available throughhospice care, ensuring peace of mind and informed decision-making.
Local faith communities, clergy members, and congregation leaders interested in participating in Hospice Sabbath, requesting a speaker, or obtaining bulletin inserts are encouraged to reach out to learn more. Visit alderwoodhealth.org/event/hospice-sabbath/ or call (336) 475-5444.
