Volunteering

Come Share Meaningful Moments With Us

Alderwood was founded—and initially fully staffed—by volunteers in 1984. Today, that spirit of service remains the foundation of everything we do. We continue to rely on the unique talents and dedication of our volunteers to ensure that every individual touched by serious illness finds the comfort they deserve.

Whether you are assisting with direct patient care, administrative tasks, or community engagement, you are helping us provide a dignified and supported journey for every family we serve.

Direct Patient Care Volunteers

Direct Patient Care Volunteers provide companionship, comfort, and emotional support to patients and families during their hospice journey. Whether offering a listening ear, sitting bedside, or helping create meaningful moments, these volunteers bring compassion and connection when it matters most.

Comfort Care Calls

Every Wednesday our Volunteers call patients to determine if they need any supplies restocked before the weekend. Our Clinical Staff ensures the supplies are gathered and delivered based on the reports from the Volunteers.

Celebrations

At Alderwood of Davidson County, we celebrate our patients at every opportunity! Volunteers deliver gifts to patients on Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day, and other special occasions such as birthdays.

Hinkle Hospice House

The Henry Etta & Bruce Hinkle Hospice House is the only inpatient facility in Davidson County. This 12-bed facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with staff and Volunteers serving our patients. Duties may include greeting guests, giving facility tours, assisting patients with meal selection, delivering snacks and drinks to patients and visitors, monitoring family rooms, or visiting with patients and their loved ones.

Companionship / Respite Visits

One of the most valuable Volunteer roles is offering companionship for patients and/or respite for their caregivers. These visits allow caregivers the opportunity to run errands or take a much-needed break. Just like our staff, our direct patient care Volunteers meet our patients where they are – in homes, nursing facilities, or our Hinkle Hospice House. Duties may include reading, reminiscing, watching TV, or preparing a light meal for the patient.

I have personally seen how this organization has helped friends and family through the difficulty of illness and losing a loved one. I feel I have been blessed by God. Each day is a gift and I feel it is important to give back. Helping another is a blessing to the one helping. You receive so much more than the patient.
